How much does Google Ads cost in NZ?

Google Ads has no set price. You pay each time someone clicks your ad, and an auction decides what that click costs. In New Zealand, clicks typically cost from under $1 in retail to $25 in legal and finance, and the most competitive searches can pass $50. Monthly budgets range from a few thousand dollars for a smaller business to hundreds of thousands for large national brands.

Why there's no single answer

Every time someone searches, the businesses bidding on that search compete for the ad spots. The more businesses chasing the same customer, and the more that customer is worth, the higher the price of each click.

That's why the range is so wide. A law firm bidding on "family lawyer Auckland" is up against plenty of other firms, and each of them stands to earn thousands from one new client. A niche online shop selling something only a few people search for might pay well under a dollar a click, sometimes only cents. Same platform, completely different cost.

And a click only gets someone to your website. Whether they enquire from there is a separate question, and it's the one that decides whether the money was well spent.

Cost per click by industry in NZ

These are typical ranges for search ads in New Zealand, and Auckland and Wellington tend to sit at the top of each one. In legal and finance, the most competitive searches regularly go past $25 a click, and some reach $50 or more.

IndustryTypical cost per click (NZD)
Finance and lending$10 to $25+
Legal services$8 to $25+
Healthcare and dental$4 to $10
Home services (plumbing, electrical)$4 to $9
Trades and construction$3 to $8
Real estate$2 to $6
Hospitality and tourism$1 to $4
Ecommerce and retail$0.50 to $3

Why legal and finance cost the most

Legal and finance sit at the top of every cost table for the same reason. One new client, mortgage or policy can be worth thousands, so plenty of businesses are willing to pay a lot to win the click. That changes how the account needs to be run.

  • Lead quality matters more than volume. At $20 a click, a form full of the wrong enquiries gets expensive fast. Targeting, ad copy and landing pages need to filter as much as they attract.
  • Track all the way to signed work. Clicks and form fills only tell half the story. Knowing which enquiries became clients is what shows where the budget should go.
  • Buying decisions take time. People rarely choose a lawyer or a lender on the first visit. Search ads work best alongside a website and reputation that hold up when they come back to compare.
  • There are rules to work within. Both industries have advertising standards, and ads need to be clear and accurate without losing their appeal.

I've managed Google Ads for law firms and finance businesses, and in both the biggest gains come from these details. More budget on its own rarely moves the needle.

What decides your monthly budget

Three things shape what you need to spend:

  • Your cost per click. Set by your industry and how many competitors are bidding.
  • The size of the area you target. New Zealand is a small market, and most towns don't have enough people searching to carry a campaign on their own. The real choice is usually between a region, the main centres or the whole country. Law firms and finance businesses often target nationally, since clients care more about expertise than location. The wider you go, the more budget it takes to show up consistently.
  • How many clicks it takes to get an enquiry. This depends on your website, your offer and how well the ads match what people searched for.

Put those together and you can work out a starting budget. If clicks cost $15 and 1 in 10 visitors gets in touch, each enquiry costs around $150. Thirty enquiries a month would need roughly $4,500. Those numbers are an example, and your own will look different, but the logic is the same for every business.

At the top end, national brands in competitive industries like travel, finance and legal can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. At that scale the campaigns, tracking and testing need a team behind them, and small improvements are worth a lot of money.

Spending smarter beats spending more

More budget doesn't fix a campaign that's pointed in the wrong direction. When I started with Franchise Matcha, we cut ad spend by a quarter and still brought in 2.5 times the leads each month, at 70% less per lead. The difference came from targeting, tracking and knowing which enquiries turned into real business.

That's the number to watch. Cost per click tells you what you paid to get someone to your site. Cost per enquiry, and how many of those enquiries become customers, tells you whether Google Ads is working.

The other half of the investment

Your ad spend goes straight to Google. The other half is the person steering it: someone who understands your business, decides where the budget goes, connects your ads to the clients they bring in and keeps improving the campaigns. That's a separate fee, and it should reflect the size and complexity of the account. Done well, the right strategic advice pays for itself through lower costs and better clients.

Common questions

How much does Google Ads cost per month in NZ?

There's no standard monthly cost. A smaller business might spend a few thousand dollars a month, while large national brands in travel, finance and legal can spend hundreds of thousands. What you need depends on your industry's cost per click, how much of the country you target and how many enquiries you want.

How much do Google Ads cost for lawyers in NZ?

Legal is one of the most expensive industries for Google Ads in New Zealand. Clicks typically cost $8 to $25, and the most competitive searches can pass $50. One new client can be worth thousands to a firm, which is why so many firms bid on the same searches. Success comes down to the quality of enquiries, and tracking which ones become signed clients.

Why is Google Ads so expensive for finance and lending?

A single mortgage, loan or insurance policy can be worth a lot to the business that wins it, so many providers compete for the same searches. Clicks typically cost $10 to $25, and the most competitive terms go well beyond that. Financial services also have advertising rules to work within, which makes experienced advice even more important.

Is there a minimum spend for Google Ads?

Google doesn't set one. The real minimum is whatever gets you enough clicks to learn what's working. New Zealand is a small market, so most campaigns need to cover a region or more to reach enough people. A small budget spread across the country in a competitive industry will run out in days and teach you very little.

Do I need to budget for strategy on top of ad spend?

Yes. Ad spend goes straight to Google, and the strategic advice and management behind it is a separate fee. That covers deciding where the budget goes, tracking which ads bring in real clients and improving the campaigns over time. The fee reflects the size and complexity of the account, from a single focused campaign through to large national budgets that need a whole team behind them.
